EDID Management

Proper EDID management is critical to both video and audio functions. EDID settings in DisplayNet Manager are configured in the EDID Library. DisplayNet Server includes a suite of Advanced EDID Management capabilities necessary for proper EDID management in complex systems.

If the video is not displaying properly, there may be an EDID compatibility issue between the source and the display. If so, this may result in a suboptimal video timing being presented to the display, or even complete image failure. In this case, use DisplayNet Server to learn the EDID from the connected display and assign it to the transmitter device. The source connected to the transmitter should read the new EDID file and only make compatible video timings available for output. It may be necessary to reboot the source device and/or configure it to output the desired timing.

If seamless switching does not appear to be working, yet the receiver and the network switch are configured correctly, there could be an EDID incompatibility issue. If the source signals being switched do not use the same resolution, refresh rate, and color depth, the switch will not be seamless. When switching between source signals with different characteristics, the display must re-synchronize. This prevents the switch from being seamless. One way to correct this is to use EDID management to ensure that the source devices being switched provide signals that use the same video timings. To do this, use DisplayNet Server to learn the EDID from the connected display and assign it to the two transmitter devices.

Example:

  1. Import the EDID from the Destination (RX) device into the EDID Library if it is not already present.
  2. Select the EDID in the EDID Library and click Upload to Upload the EDID into the Source (TX) device(s).

Additionally, it may be necessary to manually configure the sources to be certain they are outputting the same timing. With properly configured source devices, any switching between these two sources should be seamless for any receivers set to Fast Switched Mode.

If some or all audio channels are missing, it may be that an incorrect EDID file is being used. If so, this may prevent the correct audio signal from being transmitted from the source. For instance, DVI EDIDs do not support audio specifications, and if used, may prevent any audio from being transmitted. Additionally, ensure that the EDID file supports the full audio capabilities necessary for the application. For instance, if the application requires 8-channel (7.1) LPCM audio but the EDID file only supports 2 channels, then the full audio required for the application will not be present. In some cases, the source device may ignore the audio parameters in the EDID and send audio that is incompatible with the downstream audio devices. In these cases, it may be necessary to manually configure the device’s audio output settings.

If the system cannot achieve certain higher resolutions such as 3840x2160, ensure that the proper EDID is being used. The default EDID loaded into the DisplayNet devices has a preferred timing of 1920x1080 /60p (with 2-channel LPCM audio).
